Songbirds, Shorebirds, and Stewardship: Engaging Your Students with the Science of Breeding, Nesting, and Tracking Migration

A 3-Day Summer Professional Development Institute for Grades 5-8 Educators

Explore how to engage your students in participatory science (citizen science) projects using the combined study of songbirds and shorebirds. Examine how bird populations respond to environmental challenges as you investigate how both songbird and shorebird populations are being impacted by human development, climate change, and habitat disruptions.

Participate in hands-on projects as you explore Manomet’s living laboratory for both science and education alongside Manomet scientists. Learn about the breeding and nesting habits of shorebirds, with a special focus on species native to Massachusetts. Participate in a bird banding experience and gain an understanding of how banding information provides valuable data about native bird populations and migration. You will leave the course with lesson plans, strategies, and bird monitoring projects to use in your classroom that support the MA Science and Technology/Engineering Framework and strategies for Phenomena-Based Learning.
